The entertainment industry is among the most potent influences on contemporary culture. Whether it is music, movies, gaming, or social media, entertainment is a strong part of our everyday lives. But as Muslims, we have to question: What is halal and what is haram when it comes to entertainment? Where do we cross the line from relaxation to hedonism that can be detrimental to our faith?
Islam does not prohibit entertainment. Playing outside is encouraged to stay mentally and emotionally healthy. On the other side, we need to draw boundaries of entertainment based on the Quran, Hadith, and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The Purpose of Entertainment in Islam
Everything in Islam is not prohibited as far as it is constructive, even if it is entertainment, in a physical, mental, or spiritual sense. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ bestowed moderation in all aspects of life even concerning leisure activities. The Quran states:
“And do not forget your share of the world, and do good as Allah has done good to you. And do not seek corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.”
(Surah Al-Qasas 28:77)
This verse refers to the fact that the comfortable things of the world are allowed unless they lead us to the works of corruption, immorality, and disobedience of Allah.

Entertainment That Aligns with Islamic Teachings
1. Physical Activities and Sports
He further encouraged his followers to engage in swimming, horsemanship, and archery, as well as wrestling. He ﷺ said:
“Teach your children swimming, archery, and horse riding.”
(Musnad Ahmad 15613)
Different kinds of sports and fitness activities are allowed and enhance both physical fitness and mental fitness.
2. Storytelling, Poetry, and Literature
Other forms of entertainment include literature, poetry, and storytelling. The Quran narrates the tales of these nations and prophets to make a point. But these forms of entertainment should not spread lies, and immorality and violate religious values.
3. Halal Music and Nasheed
Music is a highly contested issue. A few scholars allow listening to light music that does not have immoral or obscene words, while others are stern. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“There will be among my nation people who will consider as lawful: fornication, the wearing of silk (for men), wine drinking, and the use of musical instruments.”
(Sahih Al-Bukhari 5590)
The Prophet ﷺ did allow the use of the duff (a simple hand drum) at marriage and festivities. This means music is not forbidden, but must be devoid of lewd and sinful themes.
4. Halal Movies and TV Shows
It may also be allowed to watch movies or TV series that deliver Islamic messages, educate, or entertain in a good way. However, must not seek out anything that:
- Nudity and indecency
- Encouragement of haram relationships
- Disrespect of religious beliefs
- Play any music or dialogues that promote any sins
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Modesty is part of faith.”
(Sahih Muslim 35)
So we can not take any entertainment that harms our modesty and spiritual purity.
5. Social Media and Online Content
If used wisely, social media platforms can be an endless source of knowledge and halal entertainment. Instead, they may become a source of sin such as gossip, envy, haram, and inappropriate content. Allah warns:
“Indeed, hearing, sight, and the heart, about all those [one] will be questioned.”
(Surah Al-Isra 17:36)
Muslims must have their narcissistic repositories of knowledge to gain the most out of their time and not squander it multiplying their idiocracy.
Entertainment That is Haram (Impermissible)
Activities that cause sin, corrupt the soul, or remove one from worship are among the main principles that guide whether something is haram or not. There are many kinds of haram entertainment:
1. Gambling and Betting
It is indeed gambling which is forbidden due to financial ruin and addiction in Islam. Allah says:
“O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:90)
2. Immoral and Explicit Content
It forbids entertainment that advocates nudity, fornication, adultery, or indecent language. The Quran commands:
“Say to the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their modesty. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.”
(Surah An-Nur 24:30)
The heart is darkened, and faith diminishes, in hearing, watching, listening to, or participating in, such a thing.
3. Mockery and Disrespect Toward Religion
All kinds of modern entertainment deride religious figures, practices, or beliefs. Islam forbids mockery of religious values. Allah warns:
“And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another discourse.”
(Surah Al-An’am 6:68)
4. Excessive Entertainment That Distracts from Worship
Even that which is originally halal becomes haram if it distracts one from prayers, reading the Quran, or remembering Allah. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The heart gets rusted like iron, and the polish for it is the remembrance of Allah and recitation of the Quran.”
(Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabir 14410)
Entertainment that leads to neglecting of religious duties is then classified as a source of heedlessness.
Conclusion: Striking the Balance
Entertainment is an organic part of human existence, and Islam admits halal recreational practices that rejuvenate the mind and body. But we need to be careful with what we read because it shouldn’t go against our faith and it doesn’t push us to sin.
One simple test to help you decide if an entertainment is halal:
- Does it enhance or detract from my belief?
- Would I feel comfortable doing this if the Prophet ﷺwas here?
- Is it consistent with Islamic morals and values?
Moderation best expressed by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
“The best of affairs are those that are moderate.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah 4287)
May Allah guide us in making choices that nourish our hearts and bring us closer to Him. Ameen.
