From the very beginning of creation, Allah ﷻ warned humanity of a day when every soul will be brought to account — a day known as Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment).
The Qur’an mentions this day by many names:
- Yawm al-Qiyamah (The Day of Resurrection).
- Yawm ad-Deen (The Day of Recompense).
- Yawm al-Hisab (The Day of Reckoning).
- As-Sa‘ah (The Hour).
- Al-Akhirah (The Hereafter).
- Yawm al-Fasl (The Day of Decision).
- Yawm al-Ba‘th (The Day of Rising).
Each title reflects a different aspect of this great and fearful day when every deed, thought, and intention will be brought before Allah for judgment.
“That Day, mankind will proceed in scattered groups to be shown their deeds. So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”
(Surah Az-Zalzalah 99:6–8)
But before this day arrives, Allah and His Messenger ﷺ described clear signs of Qiyamah so the believers may recognize them and strengthen their faith.
Signs of Qiyamah in Islam
In Islam, the signs of Qiyamah (Qayamat or Day of Judgment) are divided into two categories:
- Minor Signs (Ashraat as-Sughra) – smaller, continuous events leading up to the end.
- Major Signs (Ashraat al-Kubra) – huge, earth-shaking events that will occur just before the final Hour.
Together, they paint a vivid picture of how the world will change before the Last Day.
Major Signs of Qiyamah (10 Major Signs in Order)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ clearly listed the 10 major signs of Qiyamah in a Hadith (Sahih Muslim 2901). These great events will occur one after another in a terrifying sequence.
The 10 Major Signs of the Day of Judgment:
- The Appearance of Imam Mahdi – A righteous leader from the Prophet’s lineage who will restore justice.
- The Appearance of Dajjal (Antichrist) – A one-eyed deceiver who will claim to be divine.
- The Descending of Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام – Who will return to defeat Dajjal and rule with peace.
- The Appearance of Yajooj and Majooj (Gog and Magog) – Barbaric tribes who will spread corruption on Earth.
- The Smoke (Dukhan) – A massive smoke cloud that will engulf the entire world.
- The Earth Beast (Dabbatul-Ard) – A creature that will speak to mankind, exposing their disbelief.
- The Sun Rising from the West – When this happens, repentance will no longer be accepted. (Sahih Bukhari 4635)
- Three Major Earthquakes – One in the East, one in the West, and one in Arabia.
- The Fire from Yemen – A blazing fire that will drive people toward the final gathering place.
- The Trumpet of Death – The final blow that ends all life before resurrection. (Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)
These are the 10 major signs of Qiyamah in order, and none of them has yet occurred. Once they begin, the world will move rapidly toward the Day of Resurrection.
Minor Signs of Qiyamah
There are more than 70 minor signs of Qiyamah, and scholars sometimes list 72 or 77 based on various narrations. Many of these signs of the end times in Islam have already appeared.
Some Minor Signs of the Day of Judgment:
- Diminishing Trustworthiness
“When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour.” (Sahih Bukhari 6130) - Tall Buildings and Material Competition
“You will see the barefooted, naked shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings.” (Sahih Muslim 1) - Spread of Musical Instruments
“There will be people from my Ummah who will consider musical instruments lawful.” (Sahih Bukhari 5590) - People Speaking Ill of Others’ Ancestors
“Among the signs of Qiyamah is that people will curse their forefathers.” (Sahih Bukhari 6170) - Homosexuality and Open Immorality
“The Hour will not be established until people engage in intercourse in public like donkeys.” (Ibn Hibban 6764) - Illegitimate Children Will Be Abundant
Adultery and fornication will increase, weakening family ties. - Mass Killings and Bloodshed
“The Hour will not come until there is much killing.” (Sahih Bukhari 7061) - Frequent Earthquakes and Natural Calamities
“The Hour will not be established until earthquakes increase.” (Sahih Bukhari 7121) - Consumption of Various Wines
“Wine will be drunk in great quantities.” (Sahih Muslim 2003) - The Fall of Constantinople – fulfilled centuries ago, marking one of the signs of Qiyamah that have already happened.
- Time Passes Quickly
“Time will pass rapidly — a year like a month, a month like a week.” (Sahih Bukhari 7061) - Muslims Being Killed Everywhere
“Nations will call one another to attack you as eaters invite others to their dish.” (Abu Dawood 4297)
These minor signs continue to unfold, showing that the Hour (As-Sa‘ah) is drawing near.

How Many Signs of Qiyamah Are Left?
According to scholars, most minor signs of Qiyamah have already happened, from the fall of Constantinople to the moral decline we see today.
However, none of the major signs have yet appeared.
So, when people ask, “How many signs of Qiyamah are left?” — the answer is:
Only the major signs remain.
What Happens After the Signs?
After all signs are completed, Israfil (the angel) will blow the Trumpet (Soor), marking the end of all life:
“And the Trumpet will be blown, and all who are in the heavens and the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)
Then Allah will command the second blowing of the Trumpet:
“And the Trumpet will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)
This begins Yawm al-Ba‘th (The Day of Resurrection), when all people will rise from their graves for Yawm al-Hisab (The Day of Reckoning).
The Day of Reckoning and Final Judgment
Every human will stand before Allah, their deeds displayed before them.
“And the record [of deeds] will be placed, and you will see the criminals fearful of that within it.”
(Surah Al-Kahf 18:49)
The righteous will receive their record in the right hand, entering Paradise.
The disbelievers and hypocrites will receive it in the left hand, entering Hellfire.
This is Yawm ad-Deen (The Day of Recompense), where no soul will be wronged, and every deed will be weighed with absolute justice.
What Are the Signs of a Good End in Islam?
Amid all the fear of Qiyamah, Islam gives hope through husn al-khatimah – a blessed ending to life.
Signs of a good end include:
- Dying with La ilaha illallah on the tongue.
- Dying in sujood (prostration).
- Passing away on Friday or in Ramadan.
- Dying while striving in the path of Allah.
“Whoever’s last words are La ilaha illallah shall enter Paradise.”
(Abu Dawood 3116)
