The story of Imam Mahdi, also known as Muhammad al-Mahdi, is one of the most fascinating and hope-filled signs of the Qiyamah (End Times). Muslims across the world believe that before the Day of Judgment, a righteous man from the descendants of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ will rise to restore justice and faith on Earth. His name will be Muhammad ibn Abdullah, known as Imam Mahdi, “the rightly guided one.”
Who is Imam Mahdi, According to the Quran and Hadith?
While the Qur’an does not mention Imam Mahdi by name, his coming is clearly supported through authentic Hadiths. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“If there were only one day left in the life of the world, Allah would prolong that day until He sends a man from my family whose name will be like mine and whose father’s name will be like my father’s.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood 4282, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2231)
Thus, the Imam Mahdi father’s name will be Abdullah, and his own name will be Muhammad, fulfilling the prophecy, i.e., Muhammad ibn Abdullah.
The Quran indirectly supports the concept of a just leader appearing before Qiyamah in verses like:
“And We wished to favor those who were oppressed in the land, and make them leaders and inheritors.”
(Surah Al-Qasas 28:5)
This verse aligns with the mission of Imam Mahdi to establish justice after the world is filled with oppression.
When Will Imam Mahdi Come?
The exact year of Imam Mahdi’s appearance is known only to Allah ﷻ. The Prophet ﷺ warned against speculating on exact timings, but he described many signs of Imam Mahdi’s arrival:
- Widespread injustice, corruption, and bloodshed.
- Natural disasters and wars.
- The disappearance of true scholars and knowledge.
- Economic crises and false claims of prophethood.
When the world becomes dark with chaos, Allah will send Imam Mahdi to revive faith and guide humanity back to the straight path.
Where Will Imam Mahdi Appear?
According to authentic narrations, Imam Mahdi will appear in Makkah, near the Ka‘bah. People will recognize him and pledge allegiance between the Rukn (corner of the Ka‘bah) and Maqam Ibrahim.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The Mahdi will emerge from Madinah and flee to Makkah. People will come to him and make him ruler, and he will fill the Earth with justice as it was filled with tyranny.”
(Ibn Majah 4085)
Where is Imam Mahdi Now?
According to Sunni belief, Imam Mahdi has not yet been born. He will be born in the future, near the time of Qiyamah.
However, Shia Muslims believe that Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi, the 12th Imam, was born in 869 CE and is currently in occultation (ghaybah), hidden by Allah until the appointed time to reappear.
Thus, the Sunni and Shia opinions differ on his current existence but agree on his ultimate mission — the establishment of justice before the end of times.
Imam Mahdi’s Story and His Army
When Imam Mahdi appears, the world will be divided between faith and disbelief. He will not appear as a political leader or prophet, but as a humble servant of Allah. Once recognized, he will be supported by an army of 313 righteous followers, similar to the number of soldiers in the Battle of Badr.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“An army will come from the East carrying black banners, and they will give allegiance to the Mahdi.”
(Ibn Majah 4088)
This Imam Mahdi army will spread justice and peace throughout the world. Under his leadership, Islam will return to its true glory, and the Ummah will unite once again.
What Happens When Imam Mahdi Comes?
After Imam Mahdi establishes peace, Dajjal (the Antichrist) will appear as one of the greatest trials in human history. During this time, Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام will descend from the heavens in Damascus and join Imam Mahdi.
Together, Imam Mahdi and Prophet Isa will lead the believers against Dajjal, defeating him and ending his reign of deception. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Isa ibn Maryam will descend and their leader, the Mahdi, will say: ‘Lead us in prayer.’ Isa will reply: ‘The leadership has been appointed for you.’”
(Sahih Muslim 156)
This powerful unity will mark the final stage before the Day of Judgment.
What Are the Signs of Imam Mahdi’s Arrival?
Here are the key Imam Mahdi signs mentioned in the Hadith:
- Widespread injustice and disbelief.
- Frequent earthquakes and chaos.
- Wars in the Middle East.
- The killing of innocent people.
- The emergence of Dajjal shortly after his arrival.
- The descent of Prophet Isa عليه السلام.
- The spread of peace under his rule.
The appearance of Imam Mahdi is a major sign of Qiyamah and a reminder that Allah’s promise of justice will never fail. Whether he appears tomorrow or centuries later, the believer’s duty is to strengthen their faith, follow the Sunnah, and stay steadfast.
As the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The Mahdi will fill the Earth with justice and fairness as it was filled with oppression and tyranny.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood 4283)
