Yajooj And Majooj (Gog & Magog): Story, Signs & Facts (2026f)

Yajooj And Majooj (Gog & Magog) Story, Signs & Facts Before Qiyamah

Among the major signs of Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment), few inspire as much awe and mystery as the emergence of Yajooj and Majooj, known in English as Gog and Magog. Their story, deeply rooted in the Qur’an and Hadith, speaks of unimaginable power, destruction, and the ultimate triumph of divine order over chaos.

Who Are Yajooj and Majooj (Gog and Magog)?

Yajooj and Majooj are two mighty tribes descended from the children of Adam (عليه السلام). They are real human beings, not mythical creatures, though their numbers and destructive strength are beyond imagination.

In the Qur’an, Allah mentions them in Surah Al-Kahf when describing the journey of the great ruler Dhul-Qarnayn (ذو القرنين):

“Until, when he reached between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand speech. They said, ‘O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Yajooj and Majooj are spreading corruption throughout the land. So may we pay you a tribute that you might make between us and them a barrier?’”

(Qur’an 18:93–94)

The Wall of Dhul-Qarnayn and the Barrier of Yajooj and Majooj

Dhul-Qarnayn, a righteous and powerful ruler, traveled across lands spreading justice. When he reached the region between two mountains (believed to be in Central Asia or the Caucasus), he built a massive iron and copper wall to confine Yajooj and Majooj behind it.

“He said, ‘Bring me sheets of iron.’ Then when he had leveled up between the two mountains, he said, ‘Blow (with bellows).’ Until when he had made it (as) fire, he said, ‘Bring me molten copper that I may pour over it.’”

(Qur’an 18:96)

This Wall of Yajooj and Majooj (also called Sadd Dhul-Qarnayn) became a barrier protecting humanity from their corruption and destruction.

Where Are Yajooj and Majooj Now?

According to Islamic teachings, Yajooj and Majooj are still alive, confined behind the great barrier built by Dhul-Qarnayn. The Qur’an states:

“So they (Yajooj and Majooj) were unable to scale it, nor could they pierce it.”

(Qur’an 18:97)

But this wall is not permanent and its collapse will be one of the final major signs of Qiyamah.

Every day, Yajooj and Majooj try to dig through the wall, but by Allah’s will, they fail until the day appointed for their release.

When Will Yajooj and Majooj Come Out?

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Every day, Yajooj and Majooj dig through the barrier until they almost see sunlight. Then their leader says, ‘Go back; we will continue tomorrow.’ But Allah restores it stronger than before. When Allah wills for them to come out, they will say, ‘Go back; we will continue tomorrow, insha’Allah.’ And the wall will collapse.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah, 4080; Musnad Ahmad, 16344)

After the appearance of Dajjal (Antichrist) and the descent of Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام, when Dajjal is defeated, Yajooj and Majooj will break free and flood the earth with destruction.

The Destruction Caused by Yajooj and Majooj

Once released, their numbers will be so vast that they will drink entire rivers dry, including Lake Tiberias (Sea of Galilee).

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The Yajooj and Majooj will pass by Lake Tiberias and drink from it. The last of them will say, ‘There used to be water here once!’”

(Sahih Muslim, 2939)

They will ravage the earth, kill countless people, and their arrogance will reach such heights that they will shoot arrows toward the sky, claiming to have conquered the heavens.

“They will shoot their arrows toward the sky, and they will return with blood on them as a trial from Allah.”

(Sahih Muslim, 2937)

Their chaos will be unbearable — even Prophet Isa عليه السلام and his followers will retreat to Mount Tur (Sinai) for safety.

The End of Yajooj and Majooj

When the corruption reaches its peak, Prophet Isa عليه السلام and the believers will pray to Allah for help. Allah will send a special worm (naghaf) that will infect the necks of Yajooj and Majooj, causing them to die instantly.

“Allah will send a type of worm in their necks, and they will die as one person dies.”

(Sahih Muslim, 2937)

Afterward, birds with huge necks like those of camels will come and carry away their bodies. Then Allah will send rain to cleanse the earth from their stench, and peace will return once more.

Yajooj and Majooj in the Qur’an

Their story is mentioned in two main places:

  1. Surah Al-Kahf (18:93–98) – Their confinement by Dhul-Qarnayn.
  2. Surah Al-Anbiya (21:96–97) – Their eventual release before the Hour:

“Until, when Yajooj and Majooj are let loose and they rush headlong from every height. Then the true promise will draw near.”

(Qur’an 21:96–97)

These verses confirm that the release of Yajooj and Majooj is one of the final signs of the Day of Judgment.

The Location of Yajooj and Majooj

The exact location of the Wall of Dhul-Qarnayn is unknown. Scholars suggest areas such as:

  • The Caucasus Mountains (between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea),
  • Or Central Asia near modern-day Kazakhstan or Georgia.

But Allah knows best. Their precise location remains hidden, part of the unseen (Ghayb) that only Allah has full knowledge of.

Signs of Yajooj and Majooj Appearance

According to the Hadith, the appearance of Yajooj and Majooj will happen after:

  • The coming of Imam Mahdi.
  • The appearance and defeat of Dajjal.
  • The return of Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام.

Their emergence is the seventh major sign among the ten major signs of Qiyamah.

What Will Happen When Yajooj and Majooj Come Out

  • They will destroy lands, cities, and people.
  • Drink all water sources dry.
  • Spread disbelief and arrogance.
  • Prophet Isa and the believers will pray for deliverance.
  • Allah will destroy them miraculously.
  • Earth will be purified, marking the approach of the final Hour.

Lessons from the Story of Yajooj and Majooj

The story teaches us that no human power can protect against Allah’s will. Even the strongest walls can only hold back destruction until Allah permits it. It reminds us to stay humble, righteous, and prepare for the Day of Reckoning.

Yajooj and Majooj (Gog and Magog) are not legends; they are real nations whose release will shake the earth. Their emergence will be one of the final signs of Qiyamah, after which the world will move swiftly toward the Last Day.

From Dhul-Qarnayn’s wall to their destruction by divine decree, their story is a living reminder that no barrier can stand forever, and that Allah’s plan always prevails.
