Who Is Dajjal? Meaning and Signs in Islam (2026)

Who Is Dajjal

Among the most terrifying and major signs of Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment) is the appearance of Dajjal, known in English as the Antichrist. His story is not just a tale of deception but a divine warning, one that the Qur’an hints at, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described in vivid detail through authentic Ahadith.

Who is Dajjal? (Antichrist Meaning in Islam)

The word Dajjal comes from the Arabic root “Dajl,” meaning to deceive or cover the truth. Hence, Dajjal literally means “The Great Deceiver.” In English, he is often referred to as the Antichrist, because he will oppose the teachings of all prophets — especially Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام — and will try to claim divinity.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“There has been no trial, since the creation of Adam’s offspring, greater than the trial of the Dajjal.”

(Sahih Muslim, 2946)

Dajjal’s Nature and Appearance

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described Dajjal in detail so believers could recognize and reject him. He will be a young man, blind in one eye, with the word “ك ف ر” (Kāfir) written between his eyes — readable by every true believer, whether literate or not.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“No prophet was sent but that he warned his nation about the one-eyed liar (Dajjal). Know that your Lord is not one-eyed.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, 7408; Sahih Muslim, 2933)

He will appear human, but his powers and deception will be extraordinary. He will travel the entire earth within forty days, spreading fitnah (chaos) and falsehood, claiming first to be a reformer, then a prophet, and finally – falsely – a god.

Where Will Dajjal Come From?

According to authentic narrations, Dajjal will emerge from the East, specifically from a region called Khurasan (modern-day Iran, Afghanistan, or nearby areas).

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The Dajjal will emerge from a land in the East called Khurasan. A people with faces like hammered shields will follow him.”

(Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi, 2237)

He will then travel rapidly, spreading deception until he reaches Syria and Palestine, where his final confrontation will take place.

Where is Dajjal Now?

This question has intrigued Muslims for centuries. According to a well-known Hadith of Tamim ad-Dari (رضي الله عنه), recorded in Sahih Muslim (2942), Dajjal is currently alive but imprisoned on an island.

Tamim ad-Dari, a Christian who embraced Islam, told the Prophet ﷺ about his sea journey where he and his companions were shipwrecked on an island. There, they met a strange creature called al-Jassasah, who led them to a man chained and bound. That man introduced himself as Dajjal and said that he was waiting for permission to appear.

After hearing this story, the Prophet ﷺ gathered the people and confirmed it, saying:

“This agrees with what I have told you about Dajjal.”

(Sahih Muslim, 2942)

Thus, according to Islam, Dajjal is alive, confined on an unknown island, awaiting the decree of Allah to appear when the time of Qiyamah draws near.

Dajjal’s Powers and Deception

Dajjal will perform miracle, like acts to deceive people such as bringing rain, making crops grow, and even seemingly reviving the dead. However, all of this will be deception (sihr or illusion), by Allah’s will, to test the faith of believers.

He will call people to worship him as a god. Those who believe in him will live in temporary comfort, and those who reject him may face hardship — but they will be safe in the Hereafter.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“He will come to a people and invite them, and they will believe in him. He will then order the sky to rain and the earth to produce, and their livestock will return fatter than ever.”

(Sahih Muslim, 2937)

How to Protect Ourselves from Dajjal

The Prophet ﷺ gave clear guidance for protection against the fitnah of Dajjal:

  1. Recite Surah Al-Kahf — especially the first 10 verses or last 10 verses.
“Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.”
    (Sahih Muslim, 809)
  2. Seek refuge in prayer by reciting:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of Dajjal, from the trials of life and death, and from the punishment of Hellfire.”
    (Sahih Muslim, 588)
  3. Stay steadfast in Iman (faith) and trust that no one can harm except by Allah’s permission.

The Final Battle — Prophet Isa (Jesus) عليه السلام and the End of Dajjal

After Dajjal’s widespread corruption, Allah will send Prophet Isa عليه السلام (Jesus) down from the heavens. He will descend near a white minaret in Damascus (Syria), wearing two garments dyed lightly with saffron.

Prophet Isa will lead the believers and finally kill Dajjal at a place called Ludd Gate (near modern-day Tel Aviv, Israel).

“Then the son of Mary will kill him at the gate of Ludd.”

(Sahih Muslim, 2937)

With his death, truth will prevail, peace will spread, and the rule of justice will return to earth — until the next signs of Qiyamah unfold.

Lessons from the Story of Dajjal

The story of Dajjal (Antichrist) isn’t meant to frighten believers — it’s meant to strengthen faith. His rise symbolizes the final and greatest test of human belief. The Prophet ﷺ warned his followers to prepare through knowledge, prayer, and connection with the Qur’an, for those who recognize truth will never be deceived.

The appearance of Dajjal in Islam is a sign that the Day of Resurrection (Yawm al-Qiyamah) is near. His deception, false miracles, and global influence will test humanity like never before. But for the true believer, his story is not a horror — it’s a reminder of faith, truth, and the ultimate victory of Allah’s light over falsehood.
